Band of Burns - Celtic Connections - Glasgow Fruit MarketDance
25 January 20:00 - 22:00
Continuing the Celtic Connections tradition of Burns Nights with a difference, tonight’s festivities mark the Scottish debut of an ambitious Rabbie-themed collaboration, celebrating the life, work and contemporary legacy of Scotland’s best-loved bard.
Originally formed for two shows last January, Band of Burns features 12 musicians from line-ups including The Langan Band, Honeyfeet, The Odd Beats and 58 Degrees North, Adam Beattie, Dominie Hooper with diverse backgrounds in Scottish, Irish, English and Turkish music. As well as a love of Burns’s writings, all share a belief in the values he championed – equality, social justice and the power of love – and in their pressing relevance amid today’s troubled times.
Centred on arresting new versions of classic Burns songs, the band’s material also takes in original compositions and instrumental sets, delivered by an array of compelling vocalists, together with fiddle, bagpipes, and rhythm section. Their crowdfunded debut album, Live at the Union Chapel, thrillingly captures the magic of that triumphant London première.
